Over One Million People Have Died from Coronavirus

Over one million people worldwide have died from the coronavirus pandemic since its inception. This is according to Johns Hopkins University’s tally.

In the United States alone, over seven million cases out of which more than 205,000 deaths. There are fears covid-19 case could surge as winter sets in. The much awaited official covid-19 vaccine will not be ready until November.

In India, cases have surpassed 6 million with US, Brazil, India, and Mexico accounting for more than 50% of the total deaths worldwide. 

In Europe there are fears of a second wave of the pandemic as lockdown reinstructions are being eased.

Even with the announcements of an official vaccine to come soon, it will still take time for things to get back to normal globally.

Nigerian Labour Unions Suspend Planned Strike.

Nigerian Labour unions have suspended the planned strike to commence Monday 28th of September 2020. The decision was made after a meeting with the Federal government. The meeting started 8.30pm Sunday, 27th September, and lasted into the early hours of Monday morning, September 28th.

The federal government agreed to suspend the hike in electricity tariff temporarily until a detailed analysis of the electricity supply and distribution system is made.

On petrol, it was deliberated that there was urgent need to increase the local refining capacity of the nation to reduce the overdependency on importation of petroleum products.

It was also resolved that tax on minimum wage be removed as a way of cushioning the impacts of the policy on the lowest vulnerable.

Labour Unions Vows to go on Strike Despite Court Ruling against it

Nigeian labour unions have vowed to go on an indefinite strike starting Monday September 28th, 2020. This is as a result of the hike in electricity tariffs and fuel pump price . Government have been in a series of meetings with the labour unions to reach an agreement on the issue but talks remains deadlock.

However, the Nigerian industrial court has issued an interim order restraining the unions from embarking on strike. Justice Ibrahim Galadima issued the order on Thursday September 28th following an application filed by a group known as, Peace and Unity Ambassadors Association.

But the Nigerian labour union leaders said they will not comply with the court ruling and has vowed to go on strike unless the movement yields to its demands.

Another meting of the Government and Labour unions has been scheduled for Monday September 28th, the day the strike is expected to commence.

Nigeria major News Round up 16th September 2020

Nigerian students set to join other unions in upcoming nation wide protest against petrol and electricity tariff price hike.

The association of Nigerian students are set to join other unions for an upcoming nation wide strike to protest hikes in petrol and electricity fees. The students argues that despite Nigeria being a major oil producing country, it doesn’t have a functional refinery which could have made price of petrol a lot cheaper. They also rejected the recent increase in the price of electricity tariff. More of the story on Sahara reporters.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian labour congress (NLC) has given the federal government 2 week to reverse the recent hike in petrol and electricity tariffs or face civil unrest nation wide. This is according to the punch newspaper.

The federal government of Nigeria currently in talks with the trade unions to avert any form of strike or civil unrest over the recent price hikes.

Arsenal win at Fulham in their first match of the season

Arsenal win at Fulham

Fulham started their premier league campaign on a disappointing note as visiting Arsenal defeated them 3 nil.

Fulham started with hope as they pressed Arsenal in the first 10 minutes.

However, Arsenal scored against run of play in the 10min as fullam failed to clear their lines. Keeper deflected  Willian’s strike into the waiting legs of Alexandre Lacazette to slot home.

Arsenal continued dominating after their first goal. Fulham under pressure forced a foul on Lacazette in front of the 18yard at 26minute.

As a result,new signing Willian almost scored his debut goal from free kick that hits the woodwork at 27minute.

Arsenal then created several chances and Fulham were lucky to be one goal down at 42 minutes into the match.

Fulham rallied in closing stages of first half but scores end 0-1 at first half

Second half started with Arsenal pressing. The search for a second did not take long as Gabriel scored his debut goal from a poorly defended corner just 4 minutes into the second half. 0-2 Arsenal.

Arsenal now on a roll and get another goal scored by Pierre Aubameyang in the 57minute after a cross from Willian.

Willian did not score on his debut for Arsenal but had a good game. He was central to all 3 goals scored.

Arsenal now on top of the premier league table with 3 points.
