Typhoid Vaccines: Types, Administration, and Target Populations

Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. People usually contract this illness by consuming contaminated food or drinking unclean water. Once inside the body, the bacteria multiply and cause high fever, stomach pain, fatigue, and headache. Consequently, medical experts strongly recommend typhoid vaccines as a primary defense to protect vulnerable individuals and stop outbreaks before they spread.

Vaccines train your immune system to recognize and fight harmful bacteria. Therefore, getting vaccinated creates protective antibodies that neutralize the threat before you fall sick. However, because different vaccines suit different age groups and medical needs, understanding the available options helps you make informed choices.

Three Main Types of Typhoid Vaccines

Healthcare providers currently use three primary typhoid vaccines to protect people against infection. Each type uses a distinct method to build immunity and caters to specific age groups.

1. Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV)

Doctors administer TCV as a single injection into the muscle. This modern vaccine links a part of the bacterium to a carrier protein. As a result, TCV triggers a strong and long-lasting immune response. Doctors can safely give TCV to infants as young as six months old. Moreover, TCV offers the longest protection among all available options, making it the preferred choice in countries where typhoid is common.

2. Vi Capsular Polysaccharide Vaccine

Healthcare workers give the Vi polysaccharide vaccine as a single shot in the upper arm. This injectable vaccine contains sugar molecules from the surface of the bacteria. It is suitable for adults and children who are at least two years old. However, protection wanes over time. Therefore, patients require a booster dose every two years if they remain at high risk.

3. Ty21a Live Attenuated Oral Vaccine

Unlike injectable options, Ty21a comes in oral capsule form. It uses a weakened live strain of the bacteria that cannot cause illness but still alerts the immune system. Individuals aged six and older take four capsules in total, swallowing one capsule every other day with cool liquid. Furthermore, travelers and residents need a booster every five years to maintain immunity.

Target Populations for Typhoid Vaccines

Not everyone needs immediate vaccination, but specific high-risk groups benefit immensely from receiving typhoid vaccines. Identifying these target populations helps public health agencies allocate resources effectively.

  • Children in Endemic Regions: Children living in areas with poor sanitation face the highest risk of severe illness. Public health programs prioritize routine immunization for young infants in these locations.
  • International Travelers: People traveling to regions in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, or parts of Latin America should get vaccinated. Ideally, travelers should receive their doses at least two weeks before departing.
  • Laboratory Personnel: Microbiology technicians who regularly handle Salmonella Typhi cultures need continuous protection against accidental exposure.
  • Healthcare Workers: Nurses and doctors working in endemic settings frequently encounter infected patients. Thus, vaccination safeguards them while they provide care.

Vaccine Efficacy and Prevention Practices

While typhoid vaccines significantly lower your chance of getting sick, no vaccine provides 100 percent immunity. On average, these vaccines prevent 55 to 85 percent of typhoid cases depending on the specific type used. For instance, TCV delivers the highest protection rate, whereas oral and polysaccharide versions offer moderate coverage.

Because breakthrough infections can still occur, you must combine vaccination with clean habits. Always drink safe bottled or boiled water, eat freshly cooked food, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
